Activities

The 3-M Centre will work on three inter-related research areas, as given below:

  • Minerals, including minerals processing and metallurgical raw materials preparation;
  • Metallurgy, covering ferrous metallurgy and non-ferrous metallurgy; and
  • Materials, focusing on metals and alloys, energy and functional materials.

  • The Centre has the following general functions:

  • bring together key researchers/groups/centres in the 3-M areas in Australia and China to collaborate to generate a major impact in 3-M science and technology internationally;
  • identify new areas of research significant to Australia and China;
  • share the infrastructure that is available in Australia and China for collaborative research of mutual benefit;
  • identify infrastructure and other needs to strengthen research;
  • leverage off and interact with other networks for mutual benefit;
  • Develop academic, industrial and international linkages of various types;
  • interact with a wider community to promote not only science and technology but also culture to benefit Australia and China;
  • Enhance training of postgraduate students and early career researchers through bilateral research collaboration Become a national resource for the 3-M industries, research and educational institutions, Governments in Australia and China.
  • The activities of the Centre, together with their aims and expected outcomes, are given below:

  • Short-term (up to 4 weeks) exchange visits by senior/ distinguished scientists.
  • Establishment of a unique platform to enhance interdisciplinary collaborations among the key research groups from both countries to work together with significant expansion of their research strengths and capabilities, thus further developing and consolidating the leadership of both countries in the proposed areas;
  • Conduct of collaborative research which is relatively short-term (3-6 months) but critical, leading to joint publications;
  • Attraction and training of young engineers and scientists for the future 3-M in Australia and China;
  • Development of the industrial and international linkages with the end users support to facilitate the application and commercialization of the innovative research outcomes, thus contributing to the national economics and also the management of national ecosystems;
  • Attraction of leading industrial organizations in Australia and China to participate in the development and implementation of new technologies, thus enhancing the transfer of knowledge, as well as the export of resources and products;
  • Formulation of informative, strategic and political advices for the development of government policies.
  • Delivery of public lectures or seminars;
  • Formulation of collaborative research project(s);
  • Preparation of joint grant applications or research publications;
  • Application and commercialization of research outcomes;
  • Medium-term (3 - 6 months) exchange visits of junior researchers including postgraduate students and early career researchers.
